Vomiting does help with migraines. And I have personally experienced it myself. But why does throwing up relieve migraines?


Why does throwing up relieve migraines


Well, when we commit, our body releases endorphins which makes us feel better. Endorphins are a group of hormones which is secreted within the brain and nervous system. They activate the body's opiate receptors, causing analgesic effect or act as painkillers.

My experience with migraine and vomiting

I have been suffering from migraine from last 12 years. And what I noticed is every time throwing up relieved migraine every time.

After hours of a painful headache, I would feel like vomiting and I knew that finally, I will be feeling better. Throwing up would make my stomach empty and leave me weak.

But After vomiting, I would feel light and all of a sudden, within half an hour headache is gone. And I start living a normal life again.

And this happens every time I have a migraine attack. I would suffer for more than 2 hours from severe migraine and then throw up and puff! headache is gone. Vomiting also reduce the aura and visual disturbance which also vanishes completely after some time

Why does throwing up relieve migraines?

Well, there is no exact known connection between throwing up and migraine relief. Though, migraine attack is associated with nausea and vomiting.

As I said in the first paragraph, Our body releases Endorphins when we vomit. Endorphins create an analgesic effect and reduce pain. Also, is it is found that the contraction in the bloodstream causes migraine. So, when vomit, it relaxes our bloodstreams and thus reduces the migraine pain.

Migraine with vomiting - What to do?

Again, I will share my personal experience here. For me, every time I suffer from migraine, I would last for 5 to 6 hours but the vomiting will start at the 4th hour. And I would vomit 3 to 4 times before the migraine stops.

So, I take some precautions knowing that I would vomit after some. I would like to share it here:
* Avoid eating solid food - Any form of solid food can you make you vomit again and again. So it is better to avoid them until you feel good.
* Take liquid diet - Stick to liquid diets like milkshakes juices etc. That will keep you light.
* Take rest - This is a common suggestion. But taking good rest will make you feel better. Rest in a quiet room and avoid light.
