Noise Cancelling Headphones For Migraines - 5 Best Migraine Headphones

Many among us suffer from regular attacks of severe headaches which are known as migraines. But migraines are not just headaches, they are usually accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and dizziness. Doctors have discovered many reasons why people suffer from migraines, one of them being loud noise or noise sensitivity.

The reason why a particular person may be sensitive to loud noises (also known as phonophobia), while other people may seem unaffected, is because the former has nerve cells in their brains, which are extra active. Also, the sound processing areas in their brains have extra connections. This is the primary reason why they suffer from migraines. In this post, we talk about the best noise cancelling headphones for migraines.

Sound sensitivity and migraine

Sensitivity to sound is commonly reported in people suffering from migraines. Over 3/4 migraineurs experience sound sensitivity. This sound sensitivity can take many forms. For some, it may come from loud sound, while for others it may come from quiet sounds. There are people who suffer temporary or permanent hearing disorder due to sensitivity.

While the research on this topic is still ongoing, researchers have narrowed down the cause of sound sensitivity to heightened impulses between certain brain areas. This heightened connectivity is reported among these three areas: auditory cortices (the processor of auditory information), pons (communication facilitator in the brain), and anterior insula (the region associated with emotional responses).

This type of heightened connectivity in patients who suffer from anxiety, thus explaining why some migraineurs also suffer from anxiety attacks.

How noise-cancelling headphones can help with migraine?

With the sound sensitivity mechanism discussed in detail, we can now address how noise-cancelling headphones help with migraines. According to a report published in Neurology (March 2015 Edition), Researchers have concluded the fact that if we are able to reduce certain sounds using noise canceling devices during a headache, it can be prevented from becoming worse. They achieve this through these two ways:

1. Active noise cancellation: In this process, the headphones detect the harmful sound, decode it, and replace it with a signal which will repel it. Thus, the sensitivity producing sounds are canceled out completely.

2. Passive noise cancellation: This basically refers to isolating the sensitivity causing sounds. This can be achieved through well-fitting cups, which seal the ears completely, thus blocking any external noise. A good quality headphone can reduce the passive noise by up to 50 decibels.

How to Use These Noise Cancelling Headphones for migraines for best results?

After having discussed some of the best noise cancelling headphones, the question arises, does use of headphones has anything to do with migraines? If yes, what are the best ways to use these headphones for best results? Here are a few ways to use headphones to avoid migraines:
•    Adjusting for Proper Fit: Every headphone is designed for a custom head size. However, noise-canceling headphones come with an adjustable size, which can be stretched/collapsed depending on the size of the user. To avoid any complications due to uncomfortable headphones, ensure you adjust them properly according to your head size.

•    Reducing Listening Time: This is a very important step to follow if you want to completely cure severe and irritating headaches. If you listen for straight 4 hours, avoid it. Listen for 1 hour continuously, then take a break, and go back to it. This break allows your temples, ears, and muscles to relax.

•    Turning the Volume Down: A sound above 85 decibels can, apart from causing severe headaches, permanently damage your earbuds. So, ensure you do not listen to music at a very loud volume.

•    Make them your travel companion: Most of the times, it is the noise from airports, train stations, and other public places, which is the irritant and may trigger headaches. Make use of the portable design of these headphones, and carry them wherever you travel, so that you can have a quiet time whenever you want.

Why does throwing up relieve migraines? - My Experince

Vomiting does help with migraines. And I have personally experienced it myself. But why does throwing up relieve migraines?

Why does throwing up relieve migraines

Well, when we commit, our body releases endorphins which makes us feel better. Endorphins are a group of hormones which is secreted within the brain and nervous system. They activate the body's opiate receptors, causing analgesic effect or act as painkillers.

My experience with migraine and vomiting

I have been suffering from migraine from last 12 years. And what I noticed is every time throwing up relieved migraine every time.

After hours of a painful headache, I would feel like vomiting and I knew that finally, I will be feeling better. Throwing up would make my stomach empty and leave me weak.

But After vomiting, I would feel light and all of a sudden, within half an hour headache is gone. And I start living a normal life again.

And this happens every time I have a migraine attack. I would suffer for more than 2 hours from severe migraine and then throw up and puff! headache is gone. Vomiting also reduce the aura and visual disturbance which also vanishes completely after some time

Why does throwing up relieve migraines?

Well, there is no exact known connection between throwing up and migraine relief. Though, migraine attack is associated with nausea and vomiting.

As I said in the first paragraph, Our body releases Endorphins when we vomit. Endorphins create an analgesic effect and reduce pain. Also, is it is found that the contraction in the bloodstream causes migraine. So, when vomit, it relaxes our bloodstreams and thus reduces the migraine pain.

Migraine with vomiting - What to do?

Again, I will share my personal experience here. For me, every time I suffer from migraine, I would last for 5 to 6 hours but the vomiting will start at the 4th hour. And I would vomit 3 to 4 times before the migraine stops.

So, I take some precautions knowing that I would vomit after some. I would like to share it here:
* Avoid eating solid food - Any form of solid food can you make you vomit again and again. So it is better to avoid them until you feel good.
* Take liquid diet - Stick to liquid diets like milkshakes juices etc. That will keep you light.
* Take rest - This is a common suggestion. But taking good rest will make you feel better. Rest in a quiet room and avoid light.

Nausea and Vomiting can be problematic for some of the migraine sufferers. But throwing up does help. There is no exact answer for why does throwing up relieve migraine,  after throwing up you feel better. I will keep on adding more on this article. So do subscribe to the newsletter.

Do bananas help headaches?

With the increasing awareness about healthy eating habits, people today are more inclined to include healthy foods in their daily diet. One such food item is Bananas. They contain a number of healthy vitamins and minerals which are of immense benefit to the body. Apart from being a quick snack, bananas help maintain sugar levels, are good for the heart, help in maintaining blood pressure, provide energy and help in beating gastrointestinal problems.

Do bananas help headaches

So, this blog post is to address your doubts about, do bananas help headaches? The answer is Yes, they do. There is no doubting the fact that bananas are rich in a number of nutrient and vitamins, which promote a healthy body. Apart from this, bananas also act as a boon for people who complain of having frequent headaches. Bananas contain some essential vitamins and minerals like magnesium, Vitamin B6(Riboflavin), Copper and fiber which help in curing headaches.

Fruit Rich in a Number of Vitamins and Minerals

Let us start by addressing the cause of headaches. Headaches are caused by a number of factors. Some of them are linked to poor lifestyle choices. Alcohol (especially red wine), Processed foods (such as meats which contain nitrates), changes in the sleep pattern (or a lack of sleep), wrong posture (sitting and standing), skipping regular meals, stress and depression etc are some of the causes of headaches.

Apart from these causes, headaches are also caused by a deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals in the body. Some of them are Magnesium, Vitamin B6 (Riboflavin), Omega 3 fatty Acids, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D.

Coming to bananas, they are a rich source of some of these vitamins and minerals. Bananas contain a good quantity of Magnesium (8% of Recommended Daily Intake), Vitamin B6 (33% of Recommended Daily Intake), Copper (10% of Recommended Daily Intake), and loads of fiber. Apart from this, they are rich in many other minerals, which are listed below.

  • Potassium: 9% of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI)
  • Vitamin B6: 33% of RDI
  • Vitamin C: 11% of RDI
  • Magnesium: 8% of RDI
  • Copper: 10% of RDI
  • Manganese: 14% of RDI
  • Net carbs: 24 grams
  • Fiber: 3.1 grams
  • Protein: 1.3 grams
  • Fat: 0.4 grams

How Bananas Help in Curing Headaches?
We have discussed that bananas are a rich source of minerals and vitamins which are known to cause headaches. But simply listing is not enough. Here, we will provide you in-depth explanation on how these vitamins and minerals are responsible for headaches and how bananas help to counter it. This reasoning will be more than sufficient to convince people about the headache curing properties of Bananas. As you know, Bananas are rich in:
Copper: According to a research by Turkey's YuzuncuYil University, those people who reported frequent occurrences of headaches, contained an average of 4.63 ug/dl of copper in their blood. On the other hand, when healthy people were diagnosed, they reported an average of 8.90 ug/dl of copper in their bloodstream. The results proved to be encouraging for further research on the causes of headaches and prevention. Bananas have 10% of Recommended Daily Intake of Copper present in them. Needless to say, they play an important role in balancing copper levels in the bloodstream.
Magnesium: Magnesium is a major de-stressor found in the human body, which relaxes and helps in the smooth functioning of different tissues. Apart from this, magnesium is also responsible for the quality and undisturbed sleep of individuals.

A deficiency of magnesium causes contraction of the blood vessels, which reduces the effectiveness of the feel-good hormone Serotonin, and further leads to recurring headaches, or even migraines. According to the same study mentioned above, migraines and people who complained of frequent headaches reported an average of 10.58 ug/dl of Magnesium in their bloodstream, as opposed to an average of 34.51 ug/dl in the bloodstream of healthy people.

Bananas counter this deficiency by following a two-pronged approach. With 8% of the recommended daily intake of Magnesium, they balance Magnesium levels in the bloodstream, helping cure headaches, and improve sleep quality, which is another reason for frequent headaches.
Vitamins B2 (Riboflavin) and B6: Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is an important vitamin which helps in the daily upkeep and maintenance of the cells. It helps provide energy to the body, by the metabolism of fats. It is an important player in the proper functioning of the powerhouse of the cell, the mitochondria. Bananas are an important source of Riboflavin (containing up to 0.1 mg of this important vitamin). Thus, eating a banana helps ensure the proper functioning of the mitochondrial region of the cell, which in turn reduces the occurrence of headaches.

Vitamin B6 is associated with keeping the levels of Homocysteine in check. Homocysteine is an important amino acid present in the bloodstream which can be found in meat. Deficiency of Vitamin B6 may cause an elevated level of Homocysteine in the blood, which is the reason for headaches. Bananas contain 33% of the recommended a daily intake of this vital Vitamin, thus helping cure the symptoms of headaches.
Fiber: Deficiency of fiber is not directly related to headaches, but they are an indirect source of the same. Pectin, a type of fiber which is found in Bananas, helps in moderation of the blood sugar levels, which in turn helps in curing headaches (Increased blood sugar levels are a cause of headaches). Moreover, bananas help in reducing appetite by slowing the emptying of the stomach. Thus you feel full for longer and signifies healthy functioning gut.

Headaches are also caused by any type of inflammation in the gut. Bananas contain a high amount of fiber (3.1 grams), which helps cure the inflammation, thus leading to a healthier gut, and reduced headaches.

Make Bananas an Essential Part of your Diet

A source of a number of benefits which have been listed in the above discussions, bananas, without a doubt, is packed with a number of vitamins and minerals. What’s more, they are not hard to find and are available all around the year. So, if you are suffering from frequent headaches or a person who wants to follow a healthy diet, don’t forget to include bananas in your daily diet. They can be eaten raw, added to the morning cereal, eaten as a fruit salad, or even cooked to make delicious meals.

Some Recommended Lifestyle Changes

Apart from having bananas and a healthy diet, one who suffers from frequent headaches should also make some lifestyle changes to reduce the symptoms. The yellow fruit, which is among the most widely consumed all across the world, apart from being a quick and filling snack, is also rich in many nutrients and minerals. But do bananas help migraines? Yes, bananas do help in migraines. Bananas are a good source of manganese, potassium and dietary fiber which are proven to be helpful in migraines.

Although, they combine many health benefits for people who consume bananas daily but little do people know that Bananas can also help people who frequently suffer from migraines. Bananas are rich in following vitamins and minerals:
Vitamin B6 - 0.5 mg
Manganese - 0.3 mg
Vitamin C - 9 mg
Potassium - 450 mg
Dietary Fiber - 3g
Protein - 1 g
Magnesium - 34 mg
Folate - 25.0 mcg
Riboflavin - 0.1 mg
Niacin - 0.8 mg
Vitamin A - 81 IU
Iron - 0.3 mg

What are Some Migraine Specific Nutrients Found in Bananas?

In earlier days, when somebody used to visit their physician complaining about the problem of recurring headaches, the doctor used to prescribe him aspirin.

However, with the advancement of technology, and new studies which have been conducted by the scientists, for example by the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society, based in San Diego, USA, have concluded that people who suffer from migraines may be deficient in one or more of the following vitamins and minerals:

1. Vitamin D
2. Riboflavin
3. Magnesium
4. Coenzyme Q10

These studies have led scientists to the conclusion that over the counter aspirin may not always be the solution to countering the effects of migraines. As a result, they have started recommending their patients, either supplement of the mentioned vitamins and minerals or healthy diets rich in them.

As mentioned above, bananas are rich in magnesium and also a good source of riboflavin. Scientists believe that having a banana can improve the functioning of the cell organelle mitochondria which is responsible for energy production in the cell.

Riboflavin is the vitamin which stimulates it. Also, an increasing number of migraines are a result of improper gut functioning, mainly due to inflammation. Bananas are a rich source of fiber, which helps reduce inflammation of the gut and in turn, leads to efficient gut functioning.

Do Bananas Help Migraines? - If Yes, How?

Taking forward the discussion from the previous paragraph, we know the deficiency of which vitamins and minerals are responsible for migraines and which of these are contained in bananas that make them a perfect and healthy option for combating migraines. We will take up each vitamin in detail below:

1.Magnesium: It is a very important mineral which is essential for the healthy functioning of the body. Its importance can be gauged from the fact that it is found in almost all our body tissues. However, mainly, it is found in the brain, muscles, and bones.

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, who is a functional medicine expert, “Anything that is tight, irritable, crampy, and stiff — whether it is a body part or an even a mood — is a sign of magnesium deficiency.”Thus, Magnesium is a major de-stressor. Apart from this, Magnesium also helps improve the quality of our sleep and can help people suffering from migraines.

In a paper by Drs. Mauskop and Varughese, titled “Why All Migraine Patients Should Be Treated With Magnesium,” it is concluded that Magnesium deficiency can promote cortical spreading depression which is the basic mechanism of migraines in the brain, which further contracts the blood vessels, and effects the functioning of Seratonin.

People who add bananas to their daily diet receive a good supply of Magnesium of the order of 34 mg, which helps in combating these effects.

2. Riboflavin: Vitamin B2, also widely known as Riboflavin, is an important vitamin which performs many important functions related to upkeep, repair, and development of cells. It helps in powering the various processes and improves the metabolism of fats and drugs.

It is an important player in the efficient and proper functioning of the Mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell. Studies have suggested that people who suffer from migraines have their mitochondria’s functioning improperly.

2018 Migraine In America survey, which was carried out to determine the alternatives to aspirin to treat migraines, found out that 8 out of 10 people used alternative therapies. Also, a study conducted on 55 adults suffering from migraines was done in 1998.

The group was divided into two – One was given a Riboflavin supplement, and the other, a placebo pill. The study concluded that the group with a Riboflavin supplement showed a 50% reduction in migraine cases.

Bananas are an important source of Riboflavin. Thus, eating a banana helps fire up the mitochondrial region of the cell, which in turn reduces the occurrence of a headache. In other words, bananas are helpful in preventing migraines.

3.Dietary Fiber: Many people who have a migraine history, know that migraine attacks can cause an unhealthy gut but little do they know that an unhealthy gut can also be the reason for migraine attacks in people. Yes! It is true.

A new study has found that more than half of the people who were suffering from migraines, reported Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Apart from this, an inflammation gut can also be a cause of migraines in many people.

Besides, the gut is the region where Serotonin is formed. Serotonin, as earlier discussed, is a feel good and happy hormone which regulates the happiness level in individuals. Any alteration in this hormone may act as a trigger for migraines in people.

That said, Bananas are a rich source of dietary fiber, with one banana contributing up to 3 grams of fiber.
